The next stop on our journey up the coast of Australia was Frazer Island, the world's largest sand island. We rented out a 4x4 with some backpackers and drove through the dunes to Lake Birrabeen, a beautiful perched lake on the island. An impervious base of organic matter keeps the water from draining through the sand.
